What is the Mutual Fund Returns Calculator?

A mutual fund returns calculator projects how much your investment in a mutual fund could grow over a chosen period. It works for both a one-time lump sum and a recurring monthly SIP, and shows you the split between what you invested and what you potentially earned.

How does it work?

For a lump sum, the amount compounds annually at the expected return. For a SIP, each monthly instalment compounds for its remaining duration. The tool then derives the absolute return (total gain) and the annualised return (CAGR) so you can judge performance on a per-year basis.

Formula

Lump sum: FV = P(1 + r)^t | SIP: FV = P × [((1 + i)^n − 1)/i] × (1 + i)

  • P = invested amount (total or monthly)
  • r = expected annual return
  • i = monthly return (r ÷ 12)
  • t / n = years / number of months

Example calculation

A ₹1,00,000 lump sum at 12% for 5 years grows to about ₹1,76,234 — an absolute return of ~76% and a CAGR of ~12%. The same logic with a monthly SIP averages out market entry points.

Benefits

  • Supports both lump sum and SIP in one place.
  • Shows absolute and annualised returns for clearer comparison.
  • Helps set realistic expectations before investing.

Limitations

  • Assumes a fixed return; mutual fund NAVs fluctuate daily.
  • Excludes expense ratio, exit load and capital-gains tax.
  • Does not account for dividend payouts or scheme changes.

Conclusion

This calculator is a planning aid, not a forecast. Choose a sensible expected return, account for costs and taxes separately, and review your funds periodically against their benchmarks.

Frequently asked questions

01

Can this calculate both SIP and lumpsum returns?

Yes. Choose the investment type and the same tool projects returns for either a monthly SIP or a one-time lump sum.
02

What is absolute vs annualised return?

Absolute return is the total gain over the whole period; annualised return (CAGR) expresses it as a steady per-year rate.
03

Are mutual fund returns guaranteed?

No. Returns depend on market performance and the fund’s holdings, so the projection is only an estimate.
04

Does it include the expense ratio?

No. Enter a return that already reflects expected costs, or treat the result as a gross figure.
05

How do taxes affect my returns?

Equity and debt funds are taxed differently on capital gains. Your post-tax return will be lower than the value shown here.
06

What return should I assume?

Use the fund category’s long-term average as a guide — for example, broad equity funds have historically returned around 10–14% per year.
